The kitchen was quiet when I came in, still holding the coolness of the night. A stripe of morning light had reached the table, bright enough to show the faint tea ring I had missed yesterday. I sat down before I had decided what the day was for.
A cup left behind
The cup was where I had left it, with one swallow of tea gone cold at the bottom. I rinsed it, then stayed by the sink watching the water run over the small brown mark. It felt like a quiet way to finish something I had forgotten.
The morning taking shape
Outside, a car passed slowly over the damp street, tires making a soft shushing sound. The light moved while I watched, slipping off the table and onto the floor. Nothing important happened, but the room seemed different by the time I stood up.
What I kept
I wrote down the tea ring and the narrow strip of sun before the details blurred into the rest of the morning. Maybe that is enough for a diary entry: not a lesson, just a few things I noticed while they were still here. I want to remember how the day began without asking it to become more than it was.
